CBD Products For Dogs
With all the recent talk about the human endocannabinoid system (ECS) and the benefits of cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD), you may not be aware that our four-footed friends also have an endocannabinoid system of their own.
In a 2016 article which appeared in the Canadian Veterinary Journal, it is noted that dogs are reported to have a higher number of cannabinoid receptors in the brain compared with humans, and there are differences in the receptors and in the metabolism of cannabinoids in dogs when compared with humans. CBD products for dogs are beginning to be seen everywhere, but be aware that not all products are created equal. If you decide to purchase CBD for your pet, always do your due diligence and research the products to ensure they don’t contain anything that could be harmful to your dog.
Is CBD for dogs safe?
In the proper doses CBD products should not present a hazard for dogs, although the above-mentioned 2016 article does note that dogs may be more susceptible to possible toxic effects than humans are, so care should be taken when giving a CBD product to your dog. Follow the recommended daily amounts, and don’t give your dog a product meant for human consumption. Hemp-derived CBD that is used to create dog biscuits contain less than 0.3% THC, below the legal limit of THC. This means that these types of CBD dog treats will not give your dog a high. Always check with your veterinarian before adding these types of product to your pet’s routine.
How much CBD should my dog take and how often?
To determine how much CBD you should give your dog, follow the recommended serving suggestions on your product. Keep in mind that the amount of CBD needed will depend on the size (weight) of your dog; a small dog weighing 10 pounds or less should not be given the same amount of CBD products for dogs that a larger dog such as a St. Bernard. A typical recommended serving of CBD for dogs is once per day, given with food.
How do I give CBD products to my dog?
There are several ways and products you can give your dog CBD. If you are using a CBD oil for pets, you can simply apply a few drops to your dog’s water and food bowl when you feed him or her. With oils and tinctures, you can also add a few drops sublingually, underneath the dog’s tongue, if they comply. There are also tasty dog treats which contain CBD, another great option that dogs love.
