Hemp Oil vs. CBD Oil: What's the Difference?
If you’ve been watching the news lately, you know that industrial hemp is now legal in all 50 states, thanks to the Agricultural Act (commonly known as the Farm Bill) that passed in December of 2018. Because of this legalization of hemp, there have been a lot of new consumer products turning up in the marketplace. If you’re new to the idea of using hemp-based health products, you may be wondering what the difference is between hemp oil and CBD oil. While both have some impressive benefits, the two oils are made from different parts of the hemp plant, contain different properties, and therefore offer consumers different advantages and benefits.
What's The Difference?
Cannabis and hemp are two separate varieties of the same plant species, cannabis sativa. Cannabis (marijuana) contains high levels of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychoactive cannabinoid, and low levels of Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive cannabinoid currently being researched for its healing properties. The hemp plant is just the opposite, containing high levels of CBD and only trace amounts of THC. Hemp oil is derived from the hemp seed, contains a minimal trace amount of CBD, and is used in cooking, salad dressings, marinades, and beauty products. CBD oil is derived from the hemp plant flower, leaves, and stalks. CBD oil can be taken as a supplement sublingually, smoked or vaped, is found in food products for both human and animal consumption, and appears in topical products such as oils, creams, lotions, and salves. CBD was first discovered in 1940 (more than 20 years before THC) by Dr. Roger Adams and his team at the University of Illinois.
Beauty products made with hemp oil derived from the seed of the hemp plant offer deep hydration for the skin without clogging pores. It helps improve skin’s elasticity and nail strength, and is said to boost hair growth and prevent hair loss. Studies conducted on the possible health benefits of products containing CBD have shown it to be helpful in alleviating pain, muscle spasticity, and other symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis. As funds become available in the future, this is likely to be an area of continued research and discovery.
